President’s Update – October 2026
by Dawn Smith, President
Welcome to General election season, friends!
This time of year, especially on even-numbered years, is always super busy, and I’m getting slammed at work, so I’m working hard to find balance in my life. As someone who raised two girls while working full time, I’ve spent the last 28 years trying to find balance between my family, my job, and those things that were important to me. You’d think by now I’d be better at it, but I’m still learning. So if you’ve reached out to me and I haven’t replied, I’m not ignoring you. I’m probably just drowning in emails. I appreciate the grace you all show me.
We have a lot going on right now as a League. The most important thing (in my opinion) is sharing the great, short videos Lynn Meshke made on the three upcoming constitutional amendments. As a poll worker, if I get yelled at, it’s usually because someone didn’t do their homework, and they want some information on what exactly the amendments mean – and, as poll workers, we’re not allowed to tell voters anything. These videos are a great tool to educate voters in Wisconsin, so please share. You can find the videos on our YouTube channel and our Facebook page. If you’re willing to share the videos, but you’re having trouble finding them, reach out and we’ll get you hooked up.
I’m going to suggest you take extra time reading the newsletter this month. Our committees have been hard at work, and there’s a lot going on.
I have two events I want to highlight in October.
On October 20 we’ll be tabling at a GOTV (Get Out The Vote) event hosted by the Wisconsin Faith Voice for Justice, with artist Niki Johnson. The evening will include a meal, conversations around engaging in democracy, and an art project.
We were also invited to participate Truck-or-Treat at Options for Independent Living on October 29 from 3:00-6:00. I’ve participated in events for the League before at Options, and they were always really uplifting. We’ll need volunteers to hand out treats, so if you’re available, shoot me a text at 920-246-3605.
