Denise Gaumer Hutchison, Chair

The May LWVGGB Education meeting wasn't held so that members of the committee could join my presentation sponsored by Indivisible Green Bay at the Brown County Library on current funding issues for our public schools. Thanks to the League members who attended the event. Legislation was then pending with the Wisconsin State Legislature and the Governor's office that would have positively impacted the reimbursement rate for special education; it failed to pass, although  the legislature might still take some action. Please check out WisconsinNetwork.org for more information on the impact of vouchers. You’ll also find a link to a NY Times article in the newsletter regarding the school privatization movement and the impact of vouchers - including new information about the nationwide voucher concept. From my perspective, the national voucher concept has lots of flaws and no real guidelines yet. I hope you take a moment to read the article.

At the LWVWI Annual Meeting in Wausau last weekend, it was great to see the support for public education that continues to come through the state League and local chapters. The League talked about civics education and its importance in our public schools. The LWVWI is co-hosting the Governor's Candidate Forum at the Wisconsin Public Education Network Summer Summit in Superior on July 23-24, 2026. If interested in attending, register here.

The Wisconsin Women's Council will be holding its monthly meeting in Green Bay at the YWCA on June 11 from noon-2:00 p.m. The topic is Women in Public Office, and the meeting is open to the public. Earlier this year the Women's Council released a 20-year study about women in public office. The Council will hear from leaders in NE Wisconsin who have run for office, hold elected office or are leaders in public companies. They’ll share their experiences getting into those offices and their treatment in those offices. Please join us for this event.

The next LWVGGB Education Committee meeting will be June 25 from 3:30-5:00 via zoom. Please join us to hear about what is happening in public education around the state of Wisconsin. Email me for the Zoom link: denisegaumerhutchison@gmail.com.

If you have any topics you'd like to see the League address through the Education Committee, please email denisegaumerhutchison@gmail.com so we can consider.

It is graduation month for school districts in our area - we have a lot to be proud of regarding the graduation rate and the outstanding outcomes in our public schools.
