Denise Gaumer Hutchison, Chair

The LWVGGB Education Committee met April 23, 2026. The following issues were discussed:

  • Fund Our Public Schools lawsuit (school districts suing the state)

  • Continued work on the Tax Bill Transparency Project,

Now 40+ school districts are trying to put the cost of state-mandated private school vouchers on the tax bill, with Green Bay leading the way.

  • Wisconsin Public Education Network Summer Summit is July 23-24, 2026, in Superior Wisconsin.  LWVWI is the co-host of the Governor’s Forum on Thursday evening. You may register to attend the Summer Summit at WisconsinNetwork.org/Summit

  • The end of the legislative session: The Wisconsin State Legislature closed its session with no solution for public school Special Education funding or a solution to the lack of spendable income for public schools. 72 school districts went to referendum in April with a 64% passage rate. Thankfully, Howard Suamico was able to pass both of its referendum questions. Green Bay Area Public Schools will probably be going to referendum in November 2026.

The committee acknowledged Lynn Gerlach’s service to the GBAPSD Board. Her term ended in April 2026.

Denise Gaumer Hutchison is doing a presentation on May 21 at 6:00 pm at the Brown County Downtown Library. Instead of our monthly meeting it would be great if the Education Committee members could attend the Public School Funding program.

Denise reminded everyone about the LWVWI State Convention at the end of May in Wausau. You may still sign up to attend.
