(Denise Gaumer Hutchison, Chair)

The Education Committee met on October 23, 2025, via Zoom. We discussed the Green Bay Area Public Schools' search for a new superintendent. Community members will be able to participate in the conversation about the new superintendent search on several occasions in early November. Note the details in this (November) LWVGGB newsletter.

Our discussion also covered all the following important information about local education:

Howard Suamico School District has a survey out in the community regarding the potential referendum for the school district. If you live in the Howard Suamico School District boundaries, please consider taking the survey to provide the district with the most accurate information regarding the community’s thoughts on the referendum.

State Assembly Bill 196 and companion Senate Bill 120 would allow retired education professionals to come back to work part time without impacting their retirement benefits. These bills have bi-partisan support. Please consider contacting your legislators to encourage them to support these bills.

Jane Benson did a great presentation at the AAUW meeting regarding the statewide efforts around Fair Maps. If you need information about what is happening with Fair Maps and the hopes for a vote on Fair Maps, please reach out to Jane and have her explain what is happening. She does a great job with the information.

Many LWVGGB members participated in the No Kings Rally in Green Bay and around the country. This was a great opportunity to be educated on the important issues facing our communities related to the threats to our democracy. Please stay engaged, informed and involved. Our democracy is at stake.

Watch for information about an upcoming LWVGGB Education Committee event about public school funding and the impact of privatization. More to come!  Also, please go to the League's new Facebook page and read about the impact of the SNAP funding running out of money and not providing benefits to those who need them as of November 1. It was announced on October 28 that the Governor signed on to a lawsuit to force the president to reinstate SNAP funding. Please follow this important concern.

The next meeting of the Education Committee is scheduled for November 20 at 3:30 p.m. via zoom. Email me if you would like to join us.
