Denise Gaumer Hutchison, Chair

The Education Committee did not meet in February,  but Denise made a few presentations on behalf of the League Education Committee and her employer, Wisconsin Public Education Network. Denise provided comments at the meeting of the American Association of University Women at which Vicki Bayer, Green Bay Area Superintendent of Schools, was the keynote speaker. Lynn Gerlach, Vice President of the GBAPSD Board of Education and member of our Education committee, was a guest. Vicki explained to AAUW the importance of understanding the state public school funding situation and specifically how it impacts Green Bay Area Public Schools.

Denise also spoke at the Green Bay Education Association Retiree meeting. Topics included the legislative cycle, bills put forward but not allowed hearings, and the impact of minimal funding to special education.  People were encouraged to get involved with the League of Women Voters of Greater Green Bay, attend school board forums, and become  involved in referendum efforts in their communities.

All the school districts in the LWVGGB area will have races in April, and the Howard Suamico School District is also likely to have a referendum. Please take time to understand what is happening in these areas. Watch for details about the Green Bay Area School Board candidate forum to be held at the downtown library on March 18.

With all the activities happening, we will not have an Education committee meeting this month.
