Dawn Smith, Co-Chair
At May’s Voter Services meeting we were provided an update on the collaboration event we co-hosted on August 25 with the YWCA. Our League hosted a Sim-Vote for the kids in attendance; they were asked to vote for characters of K-Pop Demon Hunters who are running for political office. My favorite moment of the day was when an 8-year asked, “What does State Treasurer do?”
The Sim Voting was such a hit with the kids who attended that the YWCA asked if we’d be interested in holding a Sim Vote with their daycare kids at some point.
We also discussed the Welcome to the Neighborhood bags, which we’ll be distributing to the Meadows North in June – providing time for online voter registration prior to the August election.
The League has also been invited to speak to residents at House of Hope this June about the importance of voting and how voting impacts barriers resident face, like busing, SNAP benefits and healthcare.
Our June meeting will be held in the Central Library Board room at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 4, with the primary topic being an event National is asking all Leagues to host on August 8: a National Day of Action to support Unite and Rise for Voting Rights.
All members (including new members) are welcome to attend Voter Services, and questions can be directed to Dawn Smith – dawnmariestr@gmail.com, or 920-246-3605. (I typically respond more promptly to text messages than to emails.)
The committee will not meet in July as an homage to July 4.
