(Christine Lemerande, Co-Chair)

The Voter Services committee met at the Brown County Central Library on Thursday, October 2, with seven members in attendance. We discussed several initiatives and heard a fun and educational presentation by Lynn Gerlach on civics curriculum options in the Green Bay Area Public Schools.

We attended to the following business:

  • Dawn Smith wrote an apartment complex welcome letter from our League that gives new residents information on how to register to vote and change their address. The committee reviewed and approved the letter. We also discussed including a League giveaway that new residents could have to remind them of voting resources. Lynn Meshke will design a magnet and we'll order 250.

  • LWVUS officially endorsed the recent "No Kings" protests on October 18, 2025. Lynn M. will publish the information on our Facebook page to give members an opportunity to attend and Lynn Gerlach will send out an email blast.

  • LWVWI state office is asking our League for a point person to receive data collected by the Unite and Rise 8.5 initiative. Dawn will request further information on expectations of what we should do with the data collected. If you're interested in being the point person, please contact Dawn.

  • Spring 2026 elections will be busy with many elections and potential candidates. The committee will organize another in-person forum for GBAPS candidates and offer interviews for contested city and county seats.

  • The Education Committee is being consulted on a short 3-min video explaining the school funding property tax changes on 2025 tax bills. Lynn M. will coordinate with Denise GH.

  • Lynn Gerlach met with the GBAPS Director of Curriculum and shared all the civics/government course options for students grades 6-12. Students have several required and elective options. Wisconsin students are required by state law to take a 100-question civics-related quiz before graduation and pass with 65% or better. The questions are the same as on the federal citizenship test given to immigration naturalization candidates. Lynn has experience tutoring candidates and brought her flash cards to the meeting to share example questions. The committee had fun attempting to answer citizenship questions! Watch for these questions to pop up at other League events!

October was our last in-person meeting until the weather gets warmer again. Our next Voter Services Committee meeting is Thursday, November 6, 6-7 p.m. Please email Dawn Smith at dawnmariestr@gmail.comfor the virtual meeting link.
