The League Honors 61 Years of the Voting Rights Act
by Lynn Meshke, Vice President
On August 6, elected officials, community members, and members of the League of Women Voters of Greater Green Bay gathered in the Council Chamber at City Hall to commemorate the 61st anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 - one of the most significant pieces of voting rights legislation in our nation’s history.

The event was part of the League of Women Voters of the US’s Unite & Rise Day of Action during which chapters across the nation recognized this momentous anniversary with a variety of community events focused on increasing voter engagement, turnout and education, with particular emphasis on young voters and community partnerships.

Mayor Eric Genrich and Brown County Executive Troy Streckenbach shared remarks highlighting the importance of voting and civic engagement. The gathering concluded with the reading and signing of a joint proclamation recognizing August 6, 2026, as the 61st anniversary of the Voting Rights Act.

We are grateful to everyone who took time to join us in recognizing this historic milestone and reaffirming our community’s shared commitment to free, fair and accessible elections.

Democracy is strongest when we all can - and do - participate.
